Here's a surprising fact. According to Gallup's State of the Global Workplace 2026 report, just 10% of UK employees feel engaged at work. That means around nine in ten people are turning up, doing the job and getting very little back.
If that sounds like you, you're far from alone. And here's the good news: feeling stuck isn't a life sentence. It's a signal. Often, it's the clearest sign yet that your next chapter is waiting.
As a recruitment agency serving Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Kings Hill and the wider Kent area, we talk to people every day who recognise at least one of the five signs below. Spot two or three, and it might be time to start looking.
1. You dread Sunday evenings
It starts around 6pm. The weekend fades, and a heavy feeling settles in. You check your work emails "just to see", and your mood sinks.
A few nerves before a busy week are normal. But if every Sunday feels like this, your mind is telling you something. Work shouldn't steal your weekends.
2. You're stressed more often than not
Stress has become part of daily life for many UK workers. Gallup found that 46% of UK employees felt a lot of stress during the previous day. That's five points higher than before, and well above the European average of 39%.
Some pressure can be motivating. Constant stress is different. If poor sleep, headaches or a short temper have become your normal, it may be your job that needs to change, not you.
3. You've stopped learning
Think back to the last time you learned something new at work. If you're struggling to remember, that matters.
When you stop growing, your confidence and your CV can stall too. The right role should stretch you, with new skills, new challenges and a clear path forward. If your current employer can't offer that, another one might.
4. You feel underpaid and undervalued
Pay isn't everything, but it matters. Totaljobs' 2026 Salary and Benefits Report found that better pay is the main reason people plan to move jobs, chosen by 51% of those looking.
Feeling valued goes beyond your salary, too. Recognition, trust and a simple thank you all count. If you're working hard and nobody seems to notice, your talents may be better appreciated somewhere else.
5. Your job no longer fits your life
Life changes. Maybe you've started a family, moved house or simply want more time for yourself. The same Totaljobs research found that a better work-life balance is now UK workers' top career priority, chosen by 38%.
If a long commute into London or rigid hours are holding you back, there may be a better option much closer to home.
So, is now the right time to move?
If you spotted yourself in two or more of these signs, the answer may well be yes. Many people feel the same way. Gallup found that 49% of UK employees believe it's a good time to find a job where they live.
You don't need to have everything figured out. You just need to take the first step. Updating your CV, having a confidential chat or simply browsing what's out there can make the future feel exciting again.
